Name Your Fears and Destroy Them

Next month I start training for the Marine Corps Marathon. This will be my first marathon. I am excited to take on this challenge, but it also scares the daylights out of me. Naming your fears takes away their power. So I will list my fears here, at least the ones I am consciously aware of. I suspect the list will grow as training gets underway.

I am afraid that:
  1. I will injure myself.
  2. I don't have enough time to train.
  3. My relationship with my family will suffer as I devote so much time to training.
  4. I will be uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable.
  5. I am too slow to finish the MCM before the cutoff time.
  6. I am too slow to find people to do the long training runs with me & I will be running on the trail by myself for hours.
  7. I won't enjoy running a marathon as much as I enjoy running the shorter distances.
  8. I'm not strong enough to succeed.
  9. I will stop believing in myself.
  10. I will fail.
I name these fears and commit to overcoming them!

  3. Don't be afraid to ask for help in training. Maybe there's a MCM training group list you can get on for this very thing. Try to carve out special family time each week. You are allowed to be uncomfortable. Positive thoughts, Kim! You've got this!!

  4. You'll definitely beat the bridge, Kim! You can do it :) Let me know if you ever want to do a long run together (or at least portions of it together) I've had long runs where I do 4 miles myself, meet my friend for miles 4-12, and then finish the last 4 miles myself.
